Fort Island IJmuiden is the largest and most impressive defense fort of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The fort is located in the mouth of the North Sea Canal and was built in the late 19th century to protect the entrance to Amsterdam. It was also used in World War II as part of the Atlantik wall. Reminders of both these periods are still clearly visible on the island. For example, there is an infirmary, there are furnished bunkers and the murals give a good idea of the time in which they were made.
